You've probably seen these strange contraptions at conventions, the mall, nail parlors, and maybe even your office. Chair massages have you sitting face forward in a chair so the therapist can massage mostly your neck, shoulders, and back. The good thing is you don't have to take off your clothes or have oils slathered all over you. The bad thing is you don't get a thorough whole-body massage as you do with other methods, and, since this is often done in public places, it can be very distracting and not as relaxing. Depending on the massage therapist, however, a chair massage can really get the tension out of your upper body. Expert Massage Techniques DVD (Deep Tissue Massage)
Adequate recovery is also a major factor in avoiding the over-training syndrome. Over-training is characterized by irritability, apathy, altered appetite, increased frequency of injury, increased resting heart rate, and/or insomnia. It occurs when the body is not allowed to recover adequately between bouts of heavy exercise. Therapeutic massage helps you avoid over-training by facilitating recovery through general relaxation, and its other physiological effects. Students will often get some introduction to reflexology in general massage or bodywork programs. However, the training will be far less than they would get by taking a program specifically focused on reflexology. Programs accredited by the American Commission for Accreditation of Reflexology Education and Training (ACARET) offer fully 300 hours of education and training. Practitioners may achieve board certification, though, on the basis of shorter programs. Deep Tissue Massage - Jukebox
Accredited sports massage therapists must first complete a course in general massage from a school accredited by the American Massage Therapy Association/Commission on Massage Training Accreditation/Approval (AMTA/COMTAA) or their State Board of Education. They must then complete an additional training program approved by the AMTA National Sports Massage Certification Program. Many sports massage practitioners also complete the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. London Healty Relax Zone Thai Massage
The hot stone massage is connected to ancient Mayan practices, but it is in India that we find its true beginnings. According to peacefulmind.com, the hot stone massage dates back 5000 years to the Ayurveda, a very old Indian healing tradition. This envisaged an energy called prana, or the "breath of life." Yogis worked with this energy through breathing techniques, exercise, and massage with the aim of healing and increasing longevity. You will still hear therapists use Indian terms such as chakras, the seven energy centers of the body somewhat akin to acupuncture nodes. The yogis also used “tools” from the earth, such as herbs, crystals, flowers and stones. The stones have survived in hot stone massage, as well as the herbs and flowers used in the massage oils.
“I decided to go into sports massage when I experienced its effects on me as an athlete,” says McElroy. “Despite having no experience as a competitive runner in high school or college, I joined a team and realized I was pretty good. I trained while working full-time and ran my first marathon, missing the Olympic trial qualifying time by 21 seconds.

The premise behind hot stone massage therapy is that the direct heat of the stones relaxes muscles, allowing the therapist access to their deeper muscle layers. Combining hot stone protocols with a full body massage provides a very healing and effective experience. The hot stones also expand blood vessels, which encourages blood flow throughout the body. The hot stones have a sedative effect that can relieve chronic pain, reduce stress and promote deep relaxation. Massage Treatments
One of the greatest Persian medics was Avicenna, also known as Ibn Sina, who lived from 980AD to 1037AD. His works included a comprehensive collection and systematisation of the fragmentary and unorganised Greco-Roman medical literature that had been translated Arabic by that time, augmented by notes from his own experiences. One of his books, Al-Qānūn fī aṭ-Ṭibb (The Canon of Medicine) has been called the most famous single book in the history of medicine in both East and West. Avicenna excelled in the logical assessment of conditions and comparison of symptoms and took special note of analgesics and their proper use as well as other methods of relieving pain, including massage.
Typically, sports massage therapists hold a certification and maintain licensure. A good option is to become board certified through the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) and have an active membership with an association, like AMTA, to keep up to date with industry trends. Exact requirements depend upon the state in which the sports massage therapist practices.
These stones are just ok. They are very smooth and shaped well, but they are smaller in person than they appear here. Only the 2 extra large ones are any good for work on the back. Also, they don't hold heat all that long. I would possibly suggest these stones for reflexology treatments or facials, but for full body massage, they just aren't what you need. I went to the local landscaping store and got about 20 mexican river rocks for $8. They aren't as smooth and pretty, but they hold heat for a long time and are way cheaper than any "massage stones"

With thumb walking you're basically going to be using the little part of, just this joint. Right, so you'll just be doing that. A lot of times people will say to kind of come up and back down. I want to really stress that if you can come down and maintain pressure and just come up a little bit and then back down again. So, you are moving infinitesimal, you're barely moving. You can practice on your forearm here. You're going to be doing that. So you're just inching ahead and again you're not going to pop up. A lot of people when they are teaching that, they pop up, so just be sure not to do that. My Slideshow

It’s important to be open with your massage therapist about the level of pressure and discomfort you wish to endure. This may be different for certain areas and throughout the massage, feel free to communicate with your massage therapist before and during the massage. Some massage therapists find pain to be counterproductive to the process and expect you to speak up if the pain is too much.
So what does all of this mean? It seems that the positive mind (psychological) benefits of sports massage are indeed supported by research studies. Study findings also support that sports massage does not negatively affect performance, but the positive body (physiological) benefits on performance are not quite as clear. More research is needed on the positive body effects and also on the mind/body interaction after sports massage. Massage at Wandsworth physiotherapy
The 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles was the first time that massage therapy was televised as it was being performed on the athletes. 2. Petrissage (kneading). The next step is a kneading motion that is used to relax muscles that are knotted or tight. Your therapist will use his or her knuckles and thumbs to knead and squeeze the areas of your muscles that are tense. This process also relaxes soft tissue, and is thought to stimulate your nerve endings and improve your circulation.
Put medium to large stones along the breastbone, the collarbones, and in the participant's hands. Depending on the height and width of the participant, the size of the stones you use may vary. However, you should try to place one stone or more on either side of their collarbone, two large ones along the breastbone, and two palm-sized stones in their hands. They do not need to clasp these, but should instead remain fully relaxed and gently cupping the stones. Back Pain Relief: Thai Massage Tutorial, Upper Back & Arms, Carpal Tunnel, How to Massage
Effleurage is the most common stroke in Swedish massage. It is a free-flowing and gliding movement towards the heart, tracing the contours of the body using the palm of one or both hands. Oil is applied with this stroke to begin the first stage of massage. The therapist applies a light or medium constant pressure. This stroke is used to warm up the muscles, relax the body, calm the nerves, improve blood circulation and heart function, and improve lymphatic drainage.
